In spite of overall grades, swimming in certain rivers, streams, and bayous upstream from Galveston Bay may be discouraged, as 18 percent of samples collected in these urban and suburban areas still exceeded screening levels in 2020. However, ten watersheds did not have enough samples for a grade and received an I (insufficient data). The good news is that nine watersheds received A’s. Eight watersheds saw no change, while two watersheds (Armand-Taylor Bayou and West Bay watersheds) degraded. Of the 25 watersheds included in the Report Card, four watersheds saw some improvement compared to last year’s grades. More often than not, they are very low-quality and in limited stock. I have to say that I’m dissapointed with the quality of crab pots online for blue crabs. It’s the type of trap you see on shows such as Deadliest Catch. Additionally, the rivers, streams and bayous improved from a B to an A. A crab pot is what you usually think of when you think of crabbing. In 2020, bacteria concentrations exceeded screening levels in 14 percent of samples collected from Galveston Bay, indicating that the risk of bacterial infection while swimming in the open waters of the Bay remained low, improving the grade from a B to an A. With the high number of people, livestock, and pets living in the area, and an aging sewage infrastructure, bacteria and viruses from humans and other warm-blooded animals can cause illness and infection in those who come into contact with impaired water. That means the water you see in area bayous originates as rainfall runoff from the land or discharges from wastewater treatment plants. Many of our region’s bayous have little natural flow.
